  6. The most common term is quilter, although quiltmaker is also becoming popular. "Quilting" has two definitions - it means both "to make a quilt" and "to sew the layers of fabric and batting together in a decorative way." Some people say that "quilters" are really only the people who do the last step in quilting - sewing the layers together. People who just make the tops are "piecers" or "appliquers." (They may send their tops out to be professionally quilted.) Personally, I think both steps qualify for the term "quilter." Now, if you get into the so-called "art quilts" (and I say so-called not because I don't think they're art, but because I think most quilts qualify as art), they may be called fiber artists or textile artists.
