- http://www.quilterscache.com/ has TONS of free patterns. You will find tumbling blocks on there. Each block is hexagon shaped, but the peices in each block traditionally are elongated diamonds... However, designers are coming up with unique ways of doing things these days to eliminate those pesky "y" seams. oops... previous poster beat me to it. LOL

- The tumbling blocks pattern is also sometimes called baby blocks, and the attic windows pattern also uses the Y seam. The traditional way of doing it involves cutting fabric in diamond shapes, then piecing them together. In this method, you have Y seams or set-in seams, which are a little more challenging. To cut perfect diamonds, you need a ruler that can measure a 60 degree angle and a 120 degree angle. There are actually diamond shaped rulers out there with markings for different size blocks. If you use the traditional method, it's worth it to get one of these rulers. One common ruler is called the EZ Six (by EZ Quilting). Check the first link below for a picture of it, and be sure to click the link on that page for the tutorial. Quilters have come up with alternate methods for accomplish the same look and avoiding the Y seams. The links below include a review of a diamond ruler, an explanation of how to do the Y seams (demonstrated in the attic windows block), a paper pieced Tumbling Blocks that avoids using Y seams, and a strip piecing method that avoids Y seams, and uses a special ruler (although you can probably use a regular ruler). Check the last two links for some photos of tumbling blocks quilts - just for inspiration.
- There's a great website with free blocks that you can turn into quilts. When you get to the site, use the drop down box to hunt for free blocks, then locate it using their alpha listing. The website is: www.quilterscache.com
