  1. actually once someone puts directions to a block traditional or not, that is what is copywrited. Not the block itself but the directions. So unless you have the designers permission I would say no.But you can always rewrite the directions to your method.
  2. You can reference the website in your blog, but not reproduce the information (i.e. directions and images) without gaining permission from the webmaster first. There are a lot of public domain blocks out there, just make your own block, snap a pix and put it up on your blog. Directions, though, are copyrighted - so come up with your own!
  3. Some quilt blocks are original, while others have been in the quilting "library" for a hundred years or more. If someone creates an entirely new design, they hold the copyright on it (whether they register it or not). However, since there are so many common blocks out there, you can avoid the issue entirely and just use the traditional blocks. You cannot copy someone else's photos, illustrations, or instructions (more copyright issues), but you can draft the block in a computer drawing program or on paper, or you can make the block and take a photo of it, and you can write your own instructions. For ideas of traditional blocks, you should check out Barbara Brackman's book called "Encyclopedia of Pieced Quilt Patterns." You cannot copy someone else's "free pattern" and post it on your website. It's free for you to use, not to distribute. You CAN post a link to their site. If you make a quilt using their pattern, you can post a photo of your quilt, photos of you making the quilt, an explanation of your fabric choices, and any techniques you used. If people want the pattern, however, they have to get it from the copyright holder.
