Quilt Patchwork Patterns

Does anyone know a simple way to make a quilt (for beginner), that still looks nice?

I would like to make a quilt, I was just wondering if anyone has tips on how to start, what to do and what not to do etc..(besides taking a class)

  1. peice together large or small pieces of deinum ... put a layer of the white stuff in there then make the bottom out of some flanel...
  2. for my first quilt i did a very simple square pattern 12345 23451 34512 45123 51234 is a small example with each number being a different fabric make sure you leave plenty of room to stitch them together measure as many times as you need to i did probably five times and ironing the pieces helps make sure they are lined up correctly In quilting, almost every seam needs to be pressed before the piece is sewn to another. Press with an up and down motion. Moving the iron around on the fabric can distort seams, especially those sewn on the bias. When in doubt, press both seam allowances toward the darker fabric. When joining rows of blocks, alternate the direction the seam allowances are pressed to ensure flat corners. if using a sewing machine Rather than backstitching, lock off stitches by setting the machine's stitch length to the shortest setting. Start the line on that setting, sewing forward about 1/4". Then stop and reset the stitch length to 10 to 12 stitches per inch. Repeat this process at the beginning and end of every seam.
  3. There are lots of beginners books. Try Bonesteel books on half.com, she tends to explain quite well.
  4. My entire family quilts and they are very skilled at it. The best tips that I can give you are as follows. 1. Start with a very basic pattern. Simple 4 to 6 inch squares of 4 to 8 coordinating materials is a better choice for a beginner than a complex design with specific colors and shapes. 2. Pick a material that is easy to sew. Basic pre-shrunk Cotton is a good choice. Avoid textured or stretchy materials. 3. Use a sewing machine if you are less confident in your hand stitching. You can piece a quilt by hand when you know more about how the whole process works. 4. If you are still intimidated start with a small baby or child's quilt or a quilted throw and work your way up to an adult sized quilt. 5. If you do attempt a more complex pattern you may want to hire someone to do the actual quilting once you've finished the top. Otherwise just quilt it in straight lines or use ties at the corners of the squares. 6. Use a flat sheet in white or a matching color for the underside of the quilt. You will need one size larger than the size quilt that you make, a queen for a full quilt, king for a queen quilt, etc. This will allow you room to fold and hem the edges of the quilt. 7. You can buy the batting to put in the middle according to size at most craft stores or in the craft department of some department stores. I hope this helps. Happy quilting! Angel
  5. Use your old clothing instead of throwing it all away
