about making a quilt for my baby?
Ive never actually sewn before. but i assume its pretty basic. all you need to know is to be even pattern, right? im making it out of her baby cloths. it is going to be part of her 1st birthday gift from me. i know that you need the front, and the backing and the batting. but what is better, squares, or it being in different shapes? i know squares would be easier. but i want it to be pretty. thanks!

- Use squares. Arrange the squares on a large table or the bed and then you can see how it will look, and make changes before you sew it together.
- Yes, use squares if you haven't made one before - look on good websites for yummy fabrics (eQuilter.com is good, or else Hancocks's of Paducah). I made one for my son 28 years ago, and it encouraged me to finish the big bed quilt I'd started about 1961!
- Good for You! Quilts are easy if you pick a simple pattern to get started. You will fall in love with quilting. You can use squares or sew 3 strips together and make a square out of them. Just remember to make sure it is square when you start to put them together or you will be frustrated. Quilt seams are usually 1/4 inch but since this is your first one and you don't sew much you might want to use a little larger seam allowance. When you are ready to put it together, you can sandwich it like a pillow case. Backing and Top right sides together then put the batting on top, sew thru all sides leaving an opening on one side about 6 inches to turn it right side out. Just hand sew that spot together. Don't forget to "quilt" it. Just sew around the blocks to hold it all together. This is the easiest and fastest way to make a baby quilt. Good Luck and Just have fun with it! Linda D
