- you might be able to buy a kit for this with everything you need. or the library might have a book with a pattern that could help you best of luck. I think it's really nice of you to do that for your friend. and baby.

- I'd recommend a "brick quilt". "Why" is at the end. Cut equal quantities of light and dark fabric into brick-shaped pieces. These can be as small as a business card or 3" x 6" or 6" x 12", whatever, pick a size and stick to it. You may use too-small pieces for squares. The smaller the pieces, the more fabric it will take and the heavier the quilt will be (weight of the seams). Seam the narrow ends together alternating light and dark pieces, making strips as long as the desired final length. Lay them out, staggered 1/2 the length of a brick, so the bricks will produce light and dark diagonal steps. You can add on the extra squares to fill in short ends on the strips. Stitch the strips together. Sandwich with a backing and a filler in the middle and baste or tack temporarily. It's not a quilt until it's quilted. Hand-stitch or machine stitch lots of lines to keep everything together. Else-wise you could tack it thoroughly with ribbon or yarn. Then it would be a "comforter". Trim the edges and bind with bias tape, wide trill tape or with ribbon. As described, there are *no* corners to worry about "matching". There's minimal extra bulk from the piecing. My guess-timate for quantity for a 36" x 48" quilt, with extra allowed to pre-shrink the fabric: 1.5 yards for back, 1 yard light, 1 yard dark, 5 yards binding.
